1. The Golden Topic Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to find keywords with "buying intent" they can rank for on Google in the top 50 (or better) in 48 hours.
How To Do It:
- Go to Amazon and search for a topic related to your product in the Books category.
2. Look for a book with 100+ ratings (proof that over 100 people have PAID for it).
3. Study the table of contents for a topic you can write on.
Pro Tip: Look at 3 star reviews to see "what's missing," that buyers want to know.
4. Install the Keywords Everywhere browser extension to check if the topic has search engine traffic potential on Google.
5. If it does, check how many other sites on the internet have optimized for the topic by using the "allintitle" search operator (e.g. allintitle:dog treats).
6. If <500 search results are shown, write it. If >500 results, add keyword modifiers like for, best, how to, etc to try and find a topic with <500 search results (e.g. allintitle:dog treats for sensitive stomach).
The <500 search result criteria is a way to find topics underserved on the internet.
The less search results, the better your chances of ranking.
For example, the topic "dog treats for sensitive stomach" has 1,000/mo search volume:
With only 71 "allintitle" search results.
If that ain't a gem of a keyword, I don't know what is.
According to SEMrush, the top search result is getting 18,400 traffic per month (across desktop and mobile) for a blog post on "The 9 Best Dog Foods for Sensitive Stomachs."
It's ultra-specific long tail traffic that buys.
Finding these keyword gems can be hard, REALLY hard.
It takes lots of time and diligent research.
You can't use any keyword research tool to do it.
Because it's hard, most ordinary men (and women) will hide behind their Ahrefs keyword tool and keyword difficulty rating.
So before you embark on this journey, ask yourself:
Are you ordinary or are you extraordinary?
I call this The Golden Topic Technique.
Because one topic can be worth more than a bar of gold, if done right.

2. The Twitter List Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to sell their services on a monthly retainer to CEO's and CMO's at $10M+ B2B companies.
How To Do It:
- Create a list of 10 CEO's and CMO's you dream working with (along with their Twitter handles).
2. Add them to a Twitter List (go to their Twitter profile, click the three little dots at the top of their profile, then click Add/remove from Lists).
3. Study their tweets and comments for one hour.
4. Make three columns in a spreadsheet:
Column 1: Name of your dream client.
Column 2: Things THEY are promoting (eg: podcast, book, physical product, software, course, new blog post).
Column 3: Topics YOU can write to help them (eg: reverse engineer most successful podcast run by a personal brand).
Tip: If you’re afraid you don’t have enough experience to write about the topic idea, offer an expert on the topic $100 for a phone call, then write it based on that.
5. Pick a topic to write about. Write it. Promote it.
6. Send the dream client who inspired you to write it a direct message on Twitter (or email them if they have Twitter direct messages turned off):
“Yo, your tweet on X [link to tweet] inspired me to write this case study on Y: [link to content]. Thought you might find it helpful for growing XYZ company. Keep killin’ it!”
7. Promote the thing (blog post, podcast episode, book, etc) they’re promoting right now on your personal profile, in a group, to your email list and with $100 paid ads.
Remember: this is an investment in a relationship you want to build.
Send them screenshots after you do it (but don’t ask for ANYTHING in return).
Now wait and see what they say.

3. The Dog Eat Dog Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to write content GUARANTEED to drive leads.
How To Do It:
- Set up one Google Analytics goal on your website to track email sign-ups (GA > Admin > Goals > + New Goal).
2. Add content upgrades to all your blog posts.
Once someone opts-in to your content upgrade, redirect them to the thank you page you set up inside your Google Analytics Goal so your goal triggers.
3. Go into Google Analytics > Behavior > Site Content > Landing Pages. In the far right “Conversions” column select your “Email Sign up” goal. Sort by the “Goal Conversion Rate” column to see your top converting traffic-to-lead content.
4. Take the topic of your highest converting blog post and plug the "seed keyword" into the SEMrush Keyword Analytics tool (e.g. if your topic is "editorial calendar for bloggers," the seed keyword you would use is "editorial calendar.")
5. Look for other unique, phrase match keywords you can write on the topic (e.g. for the seed keyword “editorial calendar,” phrase matches are: editorial calendar template, social media editorial calendar, editorial calendar example, etc).
That's how you double down on content that converts.
I call this "The Dog Eat Dog Technique."
Because you're literally eating your own dog food to be successful.

4. The Pay To Play Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to write about topics people would pay money for.
How To Do It:
- Join a PAID online community/forum in your niche (like Content Mavericks Boardroom).
2. Create a spreadsheet with two columns:
Column 1: Questions people are asking.
Column 2: Theme of the questions.
3. Filter your spreadsheet by theme of question to see all the questions under one common theme. That's now the outline for your new post.
This exact process is how I came up with this blog post you're reading right now.
The theme of the questions was content ideas.
The answers to the questions are the individual nuggets I'm feeding you.
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried 🙂
I call this "The Pay To Play Technique."
Because the best content ideas come when you pay to play (not in free Facebook groups).

5. The DA Arbitrage Technique
Who It’s For: People who want a top spot on Google.
How To Do It:
THE BAD NEWS: To rank at the top of Google using this technique, you’re gonna have to take the top spot from someone else. And they're gonna be PISSED.
THE GOOD NEWS: There are sites out there (not as good as you) that are already ranking for topics you want your site to rank for.
Here's what you need to do:
- Find your biggest content competitors by doing a Google search for [your industry] blogs (e.g. I found the below list of content competitors doing a Google search for “content marketing blogs.”)
2. Identify one content competitor with lower domain authority than you (install the MozBar chrome extension and search for their sites one-by-one to check DA score).
3. Plug the URL into SEMrush. Go to Organic Research > Pages to find what topics on their site are driving the most traffic.
From the above screenshot I can see the topic “digital content strategy” accounts for 55% of the site’s overall traffic.
4. Write better content on the topic than them (use my writing template to do it).
Tip: If you're just getting started trying to rank, only go after keywords you find in the 30-40 keyword difficulty range.For example, when I check inside SEMrush > Keyword Analytics > Keyword Difficulty I can see the keyword difficulty is 64. If my site was <2 years old, I’d keep looking for topics with difficulty in the 30-40 range.
This is a good range for new sites to be able to win.
I call this The Domain Authority Arbitrage Technique.
Because you’re finding what topics competitors with lower domain authority than you are ranking for. Then stealing those rankings with better content.

6. The No Clients, No Problem Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to find a topic to write about when they've got no track record, and no past client results to rely on.
How To Do It:
On January 1, 2017 I started with no track record doing content marketing.
Now I've come out the other side (like a champ) to tell you what you’re gonna do.
There are two types of content that KILL for getting clients:
- Signature strategy posts. (i.e. your unique strategy documented as a framework). Example: The Ski Slope Strategy.
2. Reverse-engineering posts (i.e. someone's else's unique strategy documented as a framework). Example: Peek Inside HubSpot’s Multi-Million Dollar SaaS Growth Strategy.
Can you guess which one needs ZERO EXPERIENCE.
Yep. Number two.
Now you know, the process is fast AND simple:
- Identify the service you help people with (is it content marketing, SEO, Facebook ads, YouTube ads, cold email, back scratching, what is it?). Fill this out to get clear on exactly WHO you help and HOW you help them:
I help [target customer] with [specific characteristic of target customer] get [specific result you can promise]. I do it with a [how you deliver on the promise].
Example: I help digital marketing agencies with <$10,000/mo sales get five clients on $10,000+ monthly retainers. I do it with a content marketing system designed to attract high quality clients.
2. Identify the top companies doing that activity in your target market. Make a list of five of em'.
- Company 1
- Company 2
- Company 3
- Company 4
- Company 5
3. Go into a Facebook group (with your target audience) and create a poll:
“Yo guys, if you had to pick one, which of these [industry] company’s [Facebook ad/SEO/cold email/etc] strategy would you most like to see reverse engineered?”
BOOM. You now have your topic.
AND you have a list of people to promote it to who filled out the poll.
I call this The No Clients, No Problem Technique.
Because having no clients and no successful client case study is all in your head.
It's an advantage.
When your target customers see your killer content, and see you're a nobody:
They'll think they've found a hidden gem.
A guy or gal no one's ever heard about before, that's creating better content than the "influencers."
That's when YOU'RE IN.

7. The Toilet Paper Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to find sexy topics, in a boring niche. This is for my cousin selling toilet paper. #tweetfromtheseat
How To Do It:
- Go to Reddit and search for "toilet paper."
2. Under the Best results tab sort by RELEVANCE and posts from ALL TIME.
3. Start adding topics to your list to write:
- Who needs toilet paper?
- What’s the proper way to hang toilet paper?
- How to make toilet paper cake.
Reddit is crazy AF. You're going to get content ideas you never thought of.
I call this The Toilet Paper Technique.
Because if this technique works with toilet paper, it can work for your boring niche.

8. The Also Asked Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to find pillar content topics to write on, win the featured snippet, and get found in the "People Also Ask" carousel.
How To Do It:
- Run a 60 second survey to your email list asking these three questions:
ONE: What's the single biggest challenge you have getting more [desired result your ideal customer wants] with [key activity you help your customers with] in your business?
TWO: Why would it make a difference in your business and life to find a real solution to this challenge?
THREE: How difficult has it been for you to find a real solution to the challenge you mentioned, to date?
(Not at all difficult, Somewhat difficult, Very difficult).
2. Analyze what common challenges your customers face (starting w/ "very difficult" challenges). Then come up with a handful of pillar content topics you can write on to solve those challenges.

9. The Bump Up Technique
Who It’s For: People who want to find low hanging, easy-to-rank keywords in a couple of clicks.
How To Do It:
- Head over to SEMrush > Organic Research and plug in your website URL.
2. Go to the Positions tab and filter the report by Positions #11-20.
3. Bump topics you haven't written about (with search volume) to the top 10 by writing about them using my writing template.
Bob's your uncle!
I call this The Bump Up Technique.
Because you’re taking topics you rank on the second page of Google for (but haven’t written about yet), and giving them a bump up to the first page.

10. The Content Revival Technique
Who It’s For: People who want more traffic without creating any new content.
How To Do It:
Looking at month-over-month traffic growth in Google Analytics is MISLEADING.
You've likely got old, previously high-performing posts that are going DOWN in traffic.
You don't realize it though, because traffic from your new posts are going UP to offset your old, under-performing ones.
Look at your traffic on a PAGE-BY-PAGE basis.
Here's how to do it:
- Bust open your Google Analytics account. Go to Behavior > Site Content > All Pages. Filter the report by Organic Traffic.
2. Set the date range to cover the last year (e.g. Jan 1, 2030 to Dec 31, 2030). Tick the Compare to: checkbox and compare it to the Previous period (e.g. Jan 1, 2029 to Dec 31, 2029).
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Show rows: 100. Scroll to the top and click EXPORT > PDF.
4. Analyze the % Change of your top 100 page view posts (aka your high performers).
5. Move any Blog URLs with a negative % change in traffic into a "Content Refresh" spreadsheet.
6. Refresh the negative % change posts by removing old content, adding new content, improving formatting, etc. You can use my Content Refresh Checklist inside Content Mavericks course to do it. Here’s one example:
7. Add the Blog URLs to your content calendar to republish and re-promote.
If you do this, your posts will likely regain their former rankings, visits, and leads.
As a general rule of thumb:
Posts older than two years start slipping on rankings.
