In this post I’m going to show you how to make a deepfake video in less than 3 minutes, so it looks as realistic as this video (sorry, Cristiano Ronaldo):

Here are the exact steps to do it:

1. Upload a Video to FaceSwap

Head to FaceSwap and upload a MP4 video.

Click on 'browse video' or drag your video into the app. Make sure the video clearly shows a person's face shows clearly at all times for the best results.

2. Choose a New Face

Choose the face you want in your deepfake video from 'Used Faces', 'Database', or upload a new one to 'My faces'.

3. Render Your Video

To make the video, press the 'Render' button, up top.

Note: Don't forget to title your video in place of "Place your video title here".

4. Download the Deepfake Video

Wait for the 'Ready' indicator next to your video is done. Then, click on 'Download' to save your deepfake.

That’s it!

Deepfake Examples

Here are some examples of deepfake videos you can create using the above steps:

Is a deepfake illegal?

Deepfake content itself is not illegal. What's illegal is using deepfake technology to create fake content without express consent, including fake news, identity theft, deepfake porn, with deepfake images or deepfake video creation, for example.

Deepfakes can be legal when used for personal entertainment purposes, educational content, or artistic expressions, when all necessary permissions are in place.

Are deepfakes identity theft?

Artificial intelligence-based deepfake tools can be used as a tool for identity theft, if they mimic someone's likeness to commit fraud or deception. Using someone's personal attributes without permission, especially in a misleading or damaging manner, is a crime.

Why are deepfakes not banned?

Deepfakes have not been banned due to their potential for positive applications. While the technology has been used for creating fake, criminal content, it does have applications in fields like the entertainment industry, education, and even some areas of scientific research, such as developments with generative adversarial networks.

For instance, filmmakers can use deepfake technology to de-age actors, create realistic special effects, or bring historical figures to life.
