What is the Best Website Builder?

Here are our top picks for the best website builders to try this year:

  1. 10XPRO — best of the best
  2. LeadPages — best bang for the buck
  3. GrooveFunnels — best free alternative
  4. Oxygen — best for SEO
  5. Webflow — best for designers

🏆 10XPRO

Our Verdict — Best Of The Best

10XPRO is not just a powerful website builder. It’s a full marketing suite. The butter-smooth drag-and-drop builder coupled with their full-funnel marketing campaign templates make it a breeze for both pros and beginners.

Get 10XPRO for the best out-of-the-box experience, a quick and almost painless setup, and simple pricing.

You’ll have fully working landing pages, sales pages, blogs, member areas and even full-blown marketing campaigns in a couple of clicks.

If you plan on testing a new idea for free, start with GrooveFunnels.

I recommend you get started with the 30 day trial for $1, then upgrade to the $197 monthly plan. When you get the hang of it and it’s making you money, upgrade to the yearly plan for $1,799 (and save $565 per year).

(30-day trial for $1)

What We Like

Best Websites, One Click Away

With 10XPRO you can deploy an entire online business with a *click*... and an entire website comes to life.

On top of that, John Lint, who founded 10XPRO, is kind of a “test freak.”

Any template you can get on 10XPRO has been extensively battle-tested, in many markets. Before getting added to their template library, it’s got to be proven to convert.

There’s so much you can deploy with a single click… a full website, squeeze pages, sales pages, webinars, book funnels, membership sites… and so much more.

You even get a powerful shopping cart, so you can accept payments, offer 1-click upsells, downsells, offer bumps, and all the good stuff to increase your average order value.

Smooth-As-Butter Page Builder Experience

10XPRO’s page builder is incredibly intuitive. Even if you’re not that experienced with page builders, you’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

There are blocks for everything, such as headlines, text, bullet lists, videos, and images. There are also advanced page elements like buttons, forms, countdown timers, progress bars, pricing tables, SMS signup forms, and 2-step order forms.

Pre-Fill Order Forms

Conversion rate optimization freaks will love this one. 10XPRO order forms allow you to pre-fill order forms with a user’s details from your email marketing software.

When a subscriber lands on a checkout page and their first name, last name and email address are already prefilled, you’re taking away friction and offering a smoother, more personal checkout experience.

What We Don’t Like

No Entry-Level Pricing

On one hand, I love how simple their pricing model is… but it would be damn nice to have an entry-level plan, with more friendly pricing for new entrepreneurs who are getting started with a new project.

For them, it can become really hard to justify a $197 USD/mo investment.

Now, the truth is that this price is almost insultingly low for everything the software offers. It’s got so much packed value it could replace enough tools to more than compensate for its price, when you’re using those tools in the first place.

If you’re only planning to build a website to have “something” up there, and you’re not going to be actively generating leads or sales directly from it… maybe you should go with GrooveFunnels’ free option, instead.

To learn how you can grow your online business to $1,000/mo, to justify an ongoing investment in a platform such as 10XPRO, watch my uncut video on how to make your first $1,000/mo using content marketing.

Some Templates Look Kind Of Old School

I’ve said this before, and I confess this is mostly nitpicking… but a few of their templates and checkout page designs can feel a little dated.

For example, if you look at the checkout page template below, it has everything you need to convert sales... I just can’t help but feel like its general look, fonts and trust icons could be a little more modern looking.

Of course, most of these little things can be easily tweaked. You can set up this page to match your brand colors and use custom graphics, but it does seem that they focused their resources on functionality at the expense of form.

At the end of the day, all of these templates have been proven to work, so I can easily live with the old-school vibe a few of their templates have, knowing for sure they are good converters.

Lack Of Instant Gratification

Once you become a 10XPRO customer, you don’t get instant access to the platform. You’ll be taken to a page where you have to click on a link to activate your license.

Then, you get a message that they’ll set you up and let you know when ready.

For me, the whole process took about half an hour… and that lack of instant gratification when you first buy-in to a new software can be a bit of a bummer.

🏆 LeadPages

Our Verdict — Best Bang For The Buck

Starting at $37 a month, you can deliver unlimited pages to unlimited visitors, with a line up of apps that make marketing freaks salivate. You can easily set up pop-ups, alert bars, email trigger links, SMS opt-in text messages, and more.

Get it if you’re on a tighter budget and have a strong focus on lead conversions.

If you plan on doing something more advanced like having sales funnels with upsells and orders bumps, you should get 10XPRO.

I recommend you start with the $37/month “Standard” plan, then upgrade to annual pricing ($27/month) as you grow, to save some bucks.

(free 14-day trial)

What We Like

Drag-And-Drop Template Website

There are a TON of website templates pre-built (for any type of business) that you can point, click, and boom! You got yourself a beautiful website.

Pick a template you like, drag-and-drop 100+ pre-built design blocks to build your site just and that’s it. A breeze to get it to look just the way you want it.

Conversion-Focused, For Marketers

Leadpages position themselves as the “world’s first conversion-first website builder.” Their incredibly thorough guide on conversion optimization shows how much they know about the subject (it looks like this is one of their Greatest Hits.)

That shows in their software. You’ll get a lot of conversion focused features. Landing pages, pop-ups, SMS marketing, 1-click segmentation, landing page analytics, and even a Facebook ads creator.

When choosing website templates, you can even sort them by “highest converting”:

Some of the more advanced features like A/B testing and checkout capabilities are not available on the Standard plan ($27/month), but are more than worth the price difference, for the right business.

Free Domain Registration For One Year

When you get the yearly subscription with Leadpages, you get a free custom domain registration for a year, for any domain available at hover.com.

No need to set up DNS stuff, either. Your domain will automatically hook up to your Leadpages account.

After the first year, the domain will be renewed and billed by Hover at the standard rates.

What We Don’t Like

Page Editor Is a Little Clunky

If you’re really particular about how you want your page to look, you might get a bit frustrated with Leadpages’ interface, from time to time.

The editor can get moody, now and then. Elements sometimes may snap into the wrong places, and you might need to give it a few tries before getting it right.

It’s not the end of the world, but if you’re a little bit of a “control freak” when it comes to how your site looks… this might be a deal breaker for you.

No Shopping Cart On The Standard Plan

If you’re looking to create sales funnels and have a shopping cart under the same roof, you’ll need to commit to, at least, the “Pro” plan (starting at $59/month).

You’ll then be able to start accepting payments on any of your pages, and see an “Earnings” column added inside your analytics dashboard.

No Chat Support On Standard Plan

Leadpages actually has amazing support... it’s just a little “capped” on the Standard plan.

Standard plan users only get email support. Pro plan users get email and live chat support. Advanced plan users get email, live chat, and phone support.

To be fair, their email support usually is surprisingly fast… just not live chat fast.

Leadpages Reviews From Experts

Kailei Carr

The Asbury Group

I wanted something that looked clean, reflected my brand, and was easy to do myself. The templates are well designed so they feel very professional without using expensive graphic designers.

Michael Hall

Leadpages has been the center of our business. I love how easy it is to create amazing web pages. I recommend it to everyone I can. We would not have been able to do it so seamlessly without the drag and drop templates.

Greg Benz

Leadpages saves me so much time on marketing that I can focus on things like creating my art, creating my software—things that really drive new value in my business.

🏆 GrooveFunnels

Our Verdict — Best Free Alternative

GrooveFunnels is the most powerful way for you to build an online business for free. Not only can you build your website, but you also get a shopping cart to sell your products and services, with sales upsells and order bumps.

Get it if you’re starting out, or need a free tool to test a new business idea.

If you need more functionality or are too picky about user experience, get 10XPRO instead. It is like the Pro upgrade of GrooveFunnels.

I recommend you create a free GrooveFunnels account and try it out. If it makes sense and you’re getting value out of it, upgrade to the lifetime account for $1,397 (or 12 payments of $249).

(free lifetime access)

What We Like

The Most Complete Free Lifetime Plan

Need a free solution to build your website? You’ve found it.

GrooveFunnels offers a surprisingly generous free plan.

You can create up to 3 different websites, hooked up to 3 custom domains.

On top of that, you’ll also have access to many other benefits, like their shopping cart to sell your products, unlimited pages, and unlimited bandwidth.

You could start an entire online business off of GrooveFunnels’ free plan alone.

Site Building Blocks

GrooveFunnels’ has a big collection of pre-made blocks, and they’re all categorized:

Unless you want some crazy-custom functionality, your website can easily be built with the done-for-you building blocks.

Countdown timers, pricing tables, checkout forms… You build up your page, block by block, and later edit it with your own content.

Sell Unlimited Products

If you’re planning to sell to your clients right out of your new website, GrooveFunnels will make it extra easy for you.

One of the apps you’ll get with your account is called GrooveSell.

This is GrooveFunnels’ shopping cart, which allows you to sell as many products as you want, to as many customers as you can possibly get.

GrooveSell allows you to create money-making funnels with all the upsells, downsells, and order bumps you need. You can connect payment gateways like Stripe and PayPal, manage and export your customer data… All under the one roof.

What We Don’t Like

The Interface Is Confusing

Some people will suffer more than others, but the fact is that their interface is not the most intuitive.

It takes a little experience before you know where to click… and even then you still need at least two or three clicks before you can get into the page builder.

The builder itself has some misbehaving problems, like misclicks, weird bugs, and even having some elements popping up on random locations.

The best way to avoid those bugs is to create your website by using their ready-made blocks as much as you possibly can.

Neverending Beta Status

The whole “GrooveFunnels” suite has been in the beta stage for quite a while. That means it’s still being developed.

That “unfinished” feel comes to life with an eventual bug now and then.

Pick One: Free or $1,397?

Eventually you may need to go past the free plan’s limitations, like:

  • “Built with GrooveFunnels” sticky message on the bottom of every page
  • Needing more than 3 websites
  • Wanting to upload up to 10 videos…

(Just to name a few)

One of the things that annoy me the most in the free plan is the  “This site was built with GrooveFunnels” message they add on every page, for free users.

But still, I feel like their pricing for the pro plan is a no go for most people starting out, especially when you consider the software is still in beta.

In order to upgrade to the pro version, you can pay $1,397 in one payment, or you can pay in installments (for a higher total price):

Seems a bit pricey for people who were looking for a free plan, in the first place.

Easily managed to get a webpage built very quickly, albeit a simple one just to try out the features. I can't imagine (even) a complete newbie having too much of a problem building one out.

🏆 Oxygen

Our Verdict — Best For SEO

Oxygen is the meanest, leanest website builder out there. It’s slick and incredibly lightweight, which means your website will load faster than you can say SEO.

Get it if you’re looking for an incredibly flexible platform that is 100% SEO friendly.

If you’re not much a fan of software with a steep learning curve, you should go with the much easier to use 10XPRO, instead.

I recommend you get started with the Basic plan for $129 (one time), or the Ultimate plan for $229 if you need the most advanced features.

(60 day money back guarantee)

What We Like

Best Google PageSpeed Scores

Oxygen’s code is so well built, and so clean, their loading speeds are sure to keep both Google and your visitors happy.

Their code output is 100% bloat-free, resulting in blazing fast, highly optimized pages, even before you do any type of performance optimization.

This is incredibly important for SEO. Slow-loading websites cost you big bucks. Google shows what happens to your bounce rate for every extra second it takes your page to load on this chart:

This is how you steal rankings from slower websites.

Google is super secretive about their algorithm, but every now and then they’ll let the world know some of their ranking factors.

They have gone on the record stating how website load times are a very important ranking factor, and how slow websites can be penalized.

Be In Control

Oxygen is an incredibly flexible tool that allows you to build pretty much anything you can imagine.

With the templating function, you're able to design different templates for all the different page types you may need.

Maybe you want your blog posts to display the title of the post at the top, but not your static pages. It’s easy-peasy to do that with Oxygen.

Oxygen unleashes almost unlimited power if you know a little programming. You can write PHP, CSS, and JavaScript in a code block element, and it renders straight away, even on the page editor.

Their dynamic data functionality allows you to retrieve data from WordPress, plugins, or PHP, and display it in an element.

I’ve only scratched the surface on Oxygen’s flexibility. It really gives you an insane amount of control over your website, especially if you’re looking to avoid the cookie-cutter templates everyone and their mother have been using for years.

Lifetime Pricing

Oxygen doesn’t demand you get tied to a monthly subscription. Instead, you only need to commit to a one time payment… for life (including updates and support.)

That’s true for every single plan they offer, and you can use it on as many sites as you want.

They even offer a 60-day money back guarantee, which is more than enough time for you to figure out if Oxygen is for you.

What We Don’t Like

Extra Costs

Oxygen isn’t a standalone tool. In order to use it, you’ll need to set up a WordPress site, first.

That means you’ll need to pay a separate bill for web hosting, and maybe some other eventual costs.

Since people always ask me, my web hosting for WordPress is BigScoots, and I highly recommend them.

Also, there are a few paid plug-ins for Oxygen (like Hydrogen and OxyNinja) that are aimed at solving some of Oxygen's drawbacks. Mostly, they’re aimed at speeding up the workflow like enabling right click menus, copy and pasting capabilities, and enabling sandbox mode, to name a few.

Not Made For Muggles (aka Non-Techies)

If you’re a complete beginner with website builders, and have no idea of what CSS or HTML even are… you’re probably going to be banging your head to the wall a few times, in the beginning.

Sure, you can learn enough to add some templates, make changes, watch some step-by-step tutorials and all that…

But there’s always going to be technical stuff that’s not fully clear for people who aren’t web developers.

If you’re just looking to build a simple blog and would never touch HTML, CSS and all those coding languages with a pole... maybe you should skip on Oxygen.

Go with 10XPRO for the smoothest website building experience, or GrooveFunnels if you want a free website builder to start with.

Sluggish Support

Oxygen’s support is a ticketing system, and they can take up to 48 hours to reply. They’ll usually reply within 24 hours, but that’s still a bit slow.

On the other hand, their knowledge base is packed with great tutorials, and their communities on Facebook and their private forums are much faster in helping you get unstuck.

One more thing that’s worth mentioning… Even though it might take them 24-48 hours to respond, these guys really know their stuff.

So if you run into a really hairy problem that the community can’t help you with, their support will take care of your requests with stellar service.

🏆 Webflow

Our Verdict — Best For Designers

Webflow is uniquely positioned as a website builder made specific for designers, in a completely codeless, visual canvas (think “Photoshop” for websites).

Get it if you’re a user with advanced technical skills, or are willing to roll up your sleeves to take the time to go through the learning curve.

If you want something ready to use out of the box, go with 10XPRO, instead.

I recommend you build your website for free, then get in touch with their support to figure out which is the best plan for you.

(free until you're ready to launch)

What We Like

Free Until You’re Ready To Launch

You can use WebFlow for free for as long as you want on a trial basis, no credit card needed. You’ll get full access to designing features, and you can publish your sites to a webflow.io subdomain, on up to two projects.

Once you’re ready to go live, you just choose the plan that suits your needs and choose to go with month-to-month or yearly payment plans.

Best Web Design

Webflow’s website builder seems to be a big hit amongst their user base. Their templates are absolutely beautiful, and they can quickly be edited to your liking.

If you’re not scared of a little coding like HTML, CSS and JavaScript, you can pretty much do whatever you’d like.

I particularly enjoy their immersive animations and interactions, which when sparsely used, can really bring a page to life.

Reliability & Security

Webflow delivers an enterprise-grade set up, to keep your website always secure.

You get SSL certificates, an HTTP/2 compliant infrastructure, and a team collaboration tool so you can have your workers join you from anywhere in the world.

Their servers are located on AWS (Amazon Web Services), with a promise of 99.99% uptime and pages that load ultra-fast, with a dedicated CDN (Cloudfront and Fastly based).

Incredibly solid specs for such an affordable price.

What We Don’t Like

Confusing Pricing

WebFlow has so many pricing options it can feel almost like a guessing game. With 12 different options, it’s not the easiest task to figure out which plan to go with.

Their plans fall under two different categories: “Site” plans, for single, hosted websites... and “Account” plans, for agencies and freelancers who want to provide services for clients.

For example, here are four of the “Site” plans:

But you should choose different plans, depending on what you’re trying to do:

  • For building a small site without a blog get the Basic Site plan
  • For building a blog get the CMS or Business Site plan
  • For building an ecommerce store get any of the Ecommerce plans

Why? Each plan has different options that make it a better option for each type of website you might want to launch.

Prices can range from free all the way to $245/month, depending on if you want a basic website, ecommerce website, and what account limits you may need.

It feels a bit like you need a 4-year college degree just to choose the right plan, and that can be overwhelming for some people.

Beginner Un-friendly

Webflow’s like a Formula 1 car. It’s powerful, but not everyone has the knowledge to drive it.

Webflow’s page editor looks a bit like Photoshop, and is packed with a ton of functions. People who aren’t already used to other page editors might find it a little overwhelming.

If you’re not the type of person who enjoys learning your way around new software (and sifting through support documentation), you’ll probably get frustrated pretty quickly.

If you just want a great website with a more forgiving learning curve, I suggest you go with 10XPRO to get your website built faster.

Low Limits

Webflow has capped their lower tier plans a little too much, for my liking.

For example, the Basic plan ($15/mo) is capped at 25,000 visits per month and only 100 form submissions. If you’re doing any paid traffic, that could be way too low.

Their Standard plan ($42/mo), for ecommerce sites, allows you to sell only $50,000 per year, and charges a 2% transaction fee on top of Stripe/Paypal.

So, if your site gets any type of traction, you’re probably going to need to upgrade to a higher plan right away.
